Philips debuts budget PET/CT scanner with TOF

Philips Healthcare is debuting a new PET/CT scanner with its time-of-flight (TOF) technology targeted at the economy segment at this week's Society of Nuclear Medicine (SNM) meeting in San Antonio.

TruFlight Select is designed to meet the requirements of sites with budget constraints, but it comes equipped with Philips' Astonish TF premium TOF technology, the same TOF algorithm used in the company's high-end Ingenuity TF PET/CT and PET/MR scanners. The latter systems were introduced at the 2010 RSNA show.

Philips said the launch of TruFlight Select indicates that Astonish TF is being rolled out across the company's entire PET/CT product portfolio. Users of Philips TOF systems purchased since 2006 can also upgrade to the latest version of Astonish TF.

TOF technology is designed to enhance image quality by reducing image artifacts, providing higher sensitivity. A recent clinical study of TOF scans found that the technique can help improve lung and liver lesion detectability, with the improvement more pronounced in heavy patients, according to the company.
