Medical device developer Oxos Medical has been awarded a $9.6 million base cost-share contract by the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority to develop its Oxos X3 ultraportable x-ray system.

The funding will cover product development, verification, and validation, design transfer to manufacturing, human factors studies, and regulatory work toward a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) submission, as well as first commercial shipments. The contract could be worth up to $24 million if all options are exercised, Oxos said.

The X3 will be designed to image patients at the bedside or in the clinic. The company said it could also be used to triage patients at the point of injury, including detecting fractures during mass casualty events. Oxos currently markets the FDA-cleared MC2 handheld x-ray and fluoroscopy system.
