The International Society of Radiology (ISR) has released a white paper that outlines its inception in 1925 and its first congress, as well as its ongoing educational and safety efforts.
The paper describes the first congress, which addressed concerns that there was no reliable way to measure patients' radiation exposure other than assessing the degree of skin erythema. A second congress held in Stockholm in 1928 led to the establishment of the International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements and the International Commission on Radiological Protection.
The ISR was officially incorporated in 1995, and the society acts as a convener of and facilitator for continental, regional, and national quality and safety campaigns in radiation protection, it said. It established the ISR Quality and Safety Alliance (ISRQSA), which includes the following partners:

The society also works with the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the International Council on Radiation Protection (ICRP), the International Society of Radiographers and Radiological Technologists (ISRRT), and the International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP).
