CAD shows promise for detecting colitis on CT

In this session, a team from the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) will present its computer-aided detection (CAD) software, which is designed to detect colitis on CT exams.

Colitis is inflammation of the colon that is frequently associated with infection and a compromised immune system. It can be debilitating or even life-threatening, and early detection is essential to initiate proper treatment, said presenter Dr. Evrim Turkbey of the NIH's Clinical Image Processing Service.

The group sought to develop a CAD tool for automated detection of regions with colitis affecting the cecum and ascending colon in CT exams. In testing, the CAD software yielded overall per-patient classification accuracy of 83.3%. Sensitivity for colitis patients was 88.2%, Turkbey said.
