Computer-aided detection (CAD) software designed for use with digital chest radiographs can improve the detection of lung nodules by readers with different levels of expertise, according to research from Hebrew University Medical Center in Jerusalem. But results conflict as to whether more experienced readers would benefit the most from CAD.

Flat-panel CT has a big advantage in the interventional suite, where it can potentially detect cerebral microbleeds without having to stop the procedure and send the patient to a conventional CT scanner. But according to two new studies, flat-panel images still can't match those of conventional CT for detecting cerebral hemorrhage.

SUVs need adjusting for high-resolution PET/CT

Radiologists and clinicians working with high-resolution PET/CT should adjust standardized uptake values (SUVs) accordingly to reduce the chance of errors in classifying head and neck tumors, according to researchers from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. In a recent study, the team found that maximum SUVs for head and neck lesions are significantly higher with high-resolution PET/CT than with conventional or lower-resolution systems.

In a recent presentation, Hofmann stressed that interventional oncology and interventional regenerative medicine will pair imaging and molecular therapeutics, as imaging plays a pivotal role in therapeutic angiogenesis.

FDG-PET/CT is worthwhile for assessing patients with occult head and neck primary tumors, but false positives remain a shortcoming of the hybrid technology, according to a British study. The results show that FDG-PET/CT cannot replace examination under anesthesia and biopsies for assessing occult head and neck primary tumors.
