FDG-PET clears up metabolic murkiness between dementia and Alzheimer's
By
Shalmali Pal
An FDG-PET scan can separate patients with Alzheimer’s disease from those who have dementia brought on by other illnesses, according to a study in the
Journal of Nuclear Medicine
. A multi-institutional team used FDG-PET to track bilateral temporo-parietal hypometabolism in patients with hard-to-characterize memory loss, and found that the technique significantly enhanced clinical exams.

AHA declines to recommend screening for asymptomatic intracranial aneurysm
By
Shalmali Pal

FLAIR MRI falls short for diagnosing leptomeningeal metastases
By
Shalmali Pal
Does adding a little FLAIR to contrast-enhanced MRI improve the depiction of leptomeningeal metastases in the brain? Not really, according to researchers at the MD Anderson Cancer Center, who compared contrast-enhanced T1-weighted MR to fluid-attenuated inversion-recovery images.

Adding SPECT, MRI to Alzheimer's work-up costs more than it's worth, analysts say
By
Jonathan S. Batchelor
The benefits of adding functional imaging exams to the standard diagnostic work-up for Alzheimer’s disease may not be worth the cost, say researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital. In the October issue of
Radiology
, they concluded that positive and more cost-effective results can be obtained with therapeutic agents.

Neuroscientists map physiology of feelings
By
Eric Barnes
What is consciousness? Philosophers have pondered the question for millennia. Their insight kept researchers on track at a time when empirical study was limited to behavioral observation. Now researchers are turning to PET for important clues about the physiology of emotions. With a little help from philosophers, their findings on dynamic neural maps could eventually unveil the secrets of feelings, and perhaps even of consciousness itself.

fMRI center's push to share data has neuroimagers on edge
By
Shalmali Pal
Launched less than three months ago, the National fMRI Data Center has already raised a ruckus in the neuroimaging community. Not only does its director demand raw data before he'll allow studies to be published in a leading journal, he's urging other neuroscience journal editors to follow suit.

PET imaging shows brain areas activated in Tourette syndrome
By
Shalmali Pal
While tics are the defining symptom of Tourette Syndrome (TS), the neurological mechanics behind them are poorly understood. Some of those mysteries are now being unlocked by PET, which showed extensive activation of behavior-associated brain areas in TS patients, according to a study published in the August Archives of General Psychiatry.
