Nonradiologists drive rapid growth in musculoskeletal ultrasound
By
Brian Casey
Thursday, December 2 | 10:40 a.m.-10:50 a.m. | SSQ12-02 | Room E451AOne of the great things about ultrasound is that its portability and simplicity make it easy to use compared to other imaging modalities. But that might not be so great from a healthcare utilization perspective, according to researchers from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, who found that nonradiologists are utilizing ultrasound at a dramatically higher rate than radiologists.

Ultrasound-guided dry needling reduces pain from plantar fasciitis
By
Brian Casey
Tuesday, November 30 | 3:30 p.m.-3:40 p.m. | SSJ16-04 | Room E451BIn this Tuesday afternoon session, U.K. researchers will discuss the effectiveness of ultrasound-guided dry needling to relieve pain in plantar fasciitis cases that have been resistant to more conservative treatment methods.

Planmed to launch extremity CT scanner at RSNA show
By
James Brice
Finnish medical imaging vendor Planmed is banking on a compact design and a promised 10-fold reduction in radiation exposure to draw attention to Verity, a CT extremity scanner designed for bone and joint imaging to be launched at the RSNA show later this month.

CT perfusion gauges sarcoma treatment response
By
Eric Barnes
Sunday, November 28 | 11:25 a.m.-11:35 a.m. | SSA13-05 | Room E451BIn this scientific presentation, researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston will discuss their successful use of CT perfusion imaging to monitor the response to sarcoma treatment. Both tumor size and density differences were visible after antiangiogenic therapy for soft-tissue sarcomas.

CT unnecessary in most blunt trauma admissions
By
Eric Barnes
Sunday, November 28 | 11:05 a.m.-11:15 a.m. | SSA05-03 | Room N227Blunt trauma patients admitted to emergency departments are routinely scanned with CT of the chest, abdomen, and pelvis. But are all those scans really necessary in the absence of serious signs of injury? No, say Noam Millo, MD, and colleagues from the University of Alberta in Edmonton.

MR-stress radiography shows prowess in diagnosing ankle joint instability
By
Wayne Forrest
Wednesday, December 1 | 3:20 p.m.-3:30 p.m. | SSM13-03 | Room E451BIn this paper presentation, researchers from Germany will discuss MR-stress radiography and its "new possibilities" in diagnosing chronic instability of the ankle joint.

7T MRI can be used to determine the 'biological age' of cartilage
By
Wayne Forrest
Wednesday, December 1 | 11:50 a.m.-12:00 p.m. | SSK10-09 | Room E451BIn this paper presentation, researchers will discuss the use of T2-weighted 7-tesla MRI to noninvasively evaluate degenerative changes in cartilage tissue that can cause the development of arthritis.

MRI helps evaluate cartilage formation of the knee joint
By
Wayne Forrest
Wednesday, December 1 | 11:30 a.m.-11:40 a.m. | SSK10-07 | Room E451BIn this scientific session, researchers will discuss how high-resolution 3D MRI can help determine the magnitude and local distribution of load-dependent cartilage deformation in the different compartments of the knee joint.

New optical imaging device shows promise for rheumatoid arthritis
By
Wayne Forrest
Wednesday, December 1 | 10:40 a.m.-10:50 a.m. | SSK10-02 | Room E451BGerman researchers believe contrast-enhanced fluorescence optical imaging may provide an inexpensive, noninvasive, and nonionizing option for the early detection of active inflammation in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Multitransmit 3T MRI improves lumbar spine image quality, reduces scan time
By
Wayne Forrest
Tuesday, November 30 | 11:20 a.m.-11:30 a.m. | SSG10-06 | Room N226Researchers from the University of Vermont in Burlington will present their study results showing how multitransmit 3-tesla MRI enhances lumbar spine image quality and reduces scan time to 20 minutes or less.

Dual-source RF in 3T MRI reduces spinal cord exam time
By
Wayne Forrest
Tuesday, November 30 | 10:40 a.m.-10:50 a.m. | SSG10-02 | Room N226Dual-source radiofrequency (RF) transmission in 3-tesla MRI of the spinal cord reduces exam time by one-third and produces diagnostic-quality images comparable to standard single-transmission sequences, according to a new study from the University of Bonn Medical Center in Germany.

MRI helps detect soft-tissue edema after physiotherapy
By
Wayne Forrest
Monday, November 29 | 3:30 p.m.-3:40 p.m. | SSE15-04 | Room E451BIn this paper presentation, German researchers will explain how MRI can help determine an increase in soft-tissue edema after physiotherapy, which sometimes can be misinterpreted as an injury in people who play sports.
