Lemon candy may suck for curbing dry mouth after thyroid cancer therapy

Mother always warned you that eating candy before dinner would spoil your appetite. She may not have known that eating candy during radioiodine therapy for thyroid cancer can be just as bad. In a preliminary study, Japanese researchers have found that sucking on lemon candy too close to radiotherapy may actually worsen damage to the salivary glands.

Innovative MDCT raises the bar in esophageal cancer staging

Esophageal cancer is highly curable when caught early, but usually fatal when advanced, making accurate staging crucial. Researchers from Japan are improving CT's ability to stage esophageal cancer. A group from Kyoto compared arterial- to venous-phase imaging for esophageal cancer, while a team from Chiba used ECG gating to reduce motion artifacts in assessing pericardial invasion of advanced esophageal cancer.

In January 2004, the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services decided to continue the current noncoverage determination for proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), stating there is inadequate evidence to conclude that MRS is necessary for diagnosing brain tumors. A research team from California, however, has presented compelling evidence that MRS use for brain tumor diagnosis is safe, accurate, and cost-effective.
