TMJ imaging benefits from digital tomo technique

Japanese researchers have produced good results using a digital tomosynthesis technique for general radiography studies of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). As part of its research, the group also developed a new reconstruction algorithm for digital tomo studies that they say reduces image artifacts in the 3D volumes generated by the digital tomo system they used.

Computer-aided dental x-ray system quickly identifies victims of mass disasters

CHICAGO - In 1985, it took 2,800 forensic specialists more than three months to identify the remains of the 520 victims in Japan's worst commercial air disaster, the crash of Japan Airlines Flight 123. If an experimental computer-aided dental x-ray system had been available then, the identification process could have been accomplished in about nine days, according to researchers from Japan.

Studies find no drop in head/neck cancer control with less extensive dissection

A pair of studies presented at the recent 2007 American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) meeting in Los Angeles focused on managing postradiation head and neck cancer. The first looked at whether response to radiotherapy can be used to determine the extent of surgical dissection in positive lymph nodes. The second inquired if adjuvant neck dissection can be deferred in patients with complete response to chemoradiation.

FDG-PET works for nose cancer staging, study finds

FDG-PET can replace conventional workup in primary M staging of nonkeratinizing nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), according to researchers at Chang Gung University College of Medicine in Taipei, Taiwan. The team compared the diagnostic efficacies of FDG-PET and CWU, as well as a combination of the two, in detecting distant metastasis.
