Ultrasound elastography could avoid futile thyroid biopsies
By
Brian Casey
Sunday, November 28 | 11:15 a.m.-11:25 a.m. | SSA21-04 | Room S504ABElastography has been drawing interest as a means to use ultrasound to detect pathology by detecting signs of tissue stiffness. In this study, researchers from the University of Washington in Seattle will discuss their method to use elastography on thyroid nodules.

Stroke CAD system shows promise
By
Erik L. Ridley
Education Exhibit | LL-INE1188-WEA | Lakeside Learning CenterThis exhibit will present software for computer-aided detection (CAD) of stroke for automatic identification, localization, and volume estimation of ischemic infarcts in unenhanced CT images.

Perfusion brain CT performed at normal head CT doses
By
Eric Barnes
Friday, December 3 | 11:10 a.m.-11:20 a.m. | SST14-05 | Room S403BIn brain perfusion CT, multiple time-resolved images are needed to track the flow of contrast through the brain, leading to higher radiation doses in the range of 300-500 mGy. But researchers from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, can do it with less radiation -- down to 75 mGy -- using a gradient adaptive bilateral filter noise reduction algorithm.

DTI-MRI and PWI-MRI can detect signs of dementia
By
Wayne Forrest
Thursday, December 2 | 11:40 a.m.-11:50 a.m. | SSQ13-08 | Room N229Advanced MRI techniques, such as perfusion-weighted imaging (PWI) and diffusion-tensor imaging (DTI), may be useful in diagnosing dementia, according to a study from Wroclaw Medical University in Poland.

DCE-MRI can assess for head and neck cancers without radiation exposure
By
Wayne Forrest
Sunday, November 28 | 11:45 a.m.-11:55 a.m. | SSA16-07 | Room N229Researchers from the University of Washington in Seattle will unveil a new study that shows how dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) MRI may be able to differentiate malignant head and neck tumors and pathologic lymph nodes from benign lesions.

ASL-MRI can help assess patients with cerebrovascular disease
By
Wayne Forrest
Sunday, November 28 | 11:15 a.m.-11:25 a.m. | SSA17-04 | Room N226In this paper presentation, researchers from Stanford University in Stanford, CA, plan to detail evidence that arterial spin labeling (ASL) MRI may yield clinically valuable information on collateral blood flow in patients with cerebrovascular disease.

Use of head CTA scans surges in Medicare patients
By
Eric Barnes
The use of CT angiography (CTA) for head and neck indications has gone through the roof in the past few years -- rising by more than 800% between 2002 and 2007 in the Medicare population, according to a new study in the November issue of the
Journal of the American College of Radiology

Head CT frequency, costs drop for kids after rule change
By
Eric Barnes
For children with traumatic brain injuries potentially serious enough to warrant a head CT scan, a small change in the clinical guidelines used to perform follow-up head CT led to a significant drop in rescan rates and costs -- all without any apparent increase in the risk of serious injury.

Study confirms model for predicting dysphagia after RT
By
Cynthia E. Keen
Aggressive treatment using chemotherapy and radiation therapy (RT) is producing better curative and survival outcomes for individuals with head and neck cancers. But these treatments are like a double-edged sword, because the risk of developing acute and late toxicities, especially swallowing dysfunction, is high.

Cranial RT encouraged for lung cancer patients
By
AuntMinnie.com staff writers
Prophylactic cranial radiation therapy (RT) can increase the odds of survival for patients with limited-stage small cell lung carcinoma, but these patients often decline the treatment due to concerns about potential toxicities, according to a new study published online in
Cancer

SPECT/CT for thyroid cancer helps avoid more imaging tests
By
Wayne Forrest
Use of SPECT/CT can help avoid additional imaging tests for thyroid cancer evaluation and prompt changes in risk classification and treatment management among intermediate- and high-risk patients, according to a study in the September issue of the
Journal of Nuclear Medicine
