ACR teams with iCAD on CAD CT colonography
By
AuntMinnie.com staff writers
The American College of Radiology (ACR) is partnering with computer-aided detection (CAD) developer iCAD to study whether the Nashua, NH-based company's CT Colon CAD system will help radiologists interpreting virtual colonoscopy (CT colonography [CTC]) to detect more colorectal polyps and cancers than without the iCAD system.

Model finds polyp surveillance effective for cancer prevention
By
Eric Barnes
The risk of developing colorectal cancer from polyps found at virtual colonoscopy but left unresected is not precisely known, and the practice of polyp surveillance is still controversial. But a new study concludes that the low likelihood of advanced neoplasia combined with the high cost of colonoscopy argue against the immediate removal of small lesions.

Trauma radiologists overhaul abdominal CT contrast protocols
By
Eric Barnes
Radiologists routinely administer both an oral barium suspension and IV contrast for evaluating suspected appendicitis, diverticulitis, and small-bowel obstruction (SBO). Would studies work as well without oral contrast? And what about oral iodine? Can it replace barium in abdominal applications other than virtual colonoscopy? Two research groups recently explored these issues.

Teniae coli landmarks guide navigation in VC
By
Eric Barnes
A new study in
Radiology
examines the use of teniae coli -- three thick bundles of muscle that run along the outer longitudinal layer of the colon's muscularis externa -- as a navigation and localization tool for virtual colonoscopy data. Researchers from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, MD, believe that teniae coli, as extractable features of VC datasets, can significantly improve polyp localization over current methods.

CTA of the pancreas reduces failed resections
By
Eric Barnes
Used as a preoperative planning tool, multidetector-row CT angiography reduces the number of aborted pancreatic resections, according to new research from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. The retrospective study found that the addition of contrast significantly improved the detection of vascular invasion that prevented curative resection.

Radiologists in Belgium have built a popular virtual colonoscopy practice they credit with increasing awareness of colorectal cancer screening in their community and reducing unnecessary optical colonoscopies. The screening model offers a glimpse of what U.S.-based community screening practice might look like with a bit of reimbursement.
