CTA improves as first-line test for traumatic neck injury

There are clinical guidelines for determining which trauma patients should undergo CT of the neck, but there is little definitive advice on which patients should undergo CT angiography (CTA) to screen for blunt cerebrovascular injury (BCVI). Dr. Michael Lev, director of emergency neuroradiology at Boston's Massachusetts General Hospital, discusses the use of extracranial vascular imaging, particularly CTA, in blunt trauma patients admitted to the emergency department.

Michigan heart center aims DSCT guns at image quality

Doctors at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, MI, do a lot of heart imaging with their dual-source CT (DSCT) scanner. Many of their coronary CT angiography patients come from the emergency room with obesity, significant comorbidities, and worries sufficient to keep their hearts racing during the scans. Center director Dr. Gilbert Raff recently discussed the patient demographics, processes, and results that led to the group's current protocols for DSCT.

FAST exam views offer various challenges

Some views of the focused assessment with sonography for trauma (FAST) exam are more difficult to acquire and interpret than others, according to researchers from the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester. The team performed a retrospective review of all FAST exams performed by emergency medicine and attending physicians at its institution from August 2004 to July 2005.

MR shows broad spectrum of findings in pregnant women with suspected appendicitis

Although acute appendicitis is not terribly common in pregnant women, it does pose a diagnostic challenge because of anatomic and histologic changes that occur in these patients. CT carries a radiation risk while ultrasound, which is the established modality in this population, doesn't always deliver the whole story. Instead, Boston-based imagers have found success with MRI for evaluating the appendix, and more, in the gravid patient.
