While ultrasound can handily spot an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), more sophisticated imaging is needed to plan treatments such as open surgery or endovascular therapy, according to Dr. Bart Dolmatch, chief of interventional radiology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. He recently discussed the roles CT and MRI play in assessing AAA.

Stark, raving mad? Physicians say Maryland's self-referral laws too broad

To the dismay of Maryland orthopedists, urologists, and emergency surgeons, a trial court in that state has upheld a self-referral law that virtually out-Starks the Stark law by banning nonradiologists from referring for in-office imaging. Nonradiologists argue that Maryland is overstepping the federal rule and that the law diminishes patient care by taking clinical procedures that are part of standard practice out of the hands of specialty doctors.

When using a computerized provider order entry (CPOE) system, emergency department (ED) physicians tend to provide more details on a patient's medical history and on clinical questions for ED radiologists. That enhanced communication leads to better interpretation and results in ED studies, according to radiologists at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

CHICAGO - The physical wounds from brain or spinal trauma aren't the only effect of the injury: individual bankruptcy can prolong the pain of the experience, according to University of Washington researchers. They conducted a study that assessed the incidence of personal bankruptcy increases after hospital admission for serious injury, and presented their findings on Tuesday at the 2007 RSNA meeting.
