CT venography offers DVT alternative to ultrasound in ICU
By
Erik L. Ridley
Indirect CT venography (CTV) and duplex venous sonography turn in similar performance for evaluating acute deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in ICU patients with suspected pulmonary embolism, according to an article in the August
American Journal of Roentgenology
.

Management strategies evolve as CT finds more lung nodules
By
Eric Barnes
CT's rapidly advancing capabilities, aimed at catching more cancers while they're potentially curable, have been the driving force behind the growth of lung cancer screening trials over the past decade. But what to do with the proliferation of lung nodules? Two thoracic imaging experts discuss the impact of CT's growing screening database, and offer advice on which nodules to biopsy, follow, or even ignore.

Interpreting Chest X-Rays
The authors mention that it is targeted to fourth-year medical students and residents, but it is not appropriate for either of these groups.

Nebraska launches free CT lung cancer screening
By
AuntMinnie.com staff writers
A statewide consortium in Nebraska said it will soon begin recruiting smokers and former smokers for a statewide lung screening study, with CT scans to be performed annually for five years.

Even in pregnancy, CT rules for ruling out PE
By
Eric Barnes
There's no cause for misgivings when CT pulmonary angiography is needed to rule out pulmonary embolism in a pregnant woman. CTPA not only provides the most definitive diagnosis available in such patients, it does so with less radiation than scintigraphy.

Part I: Computer-aided detection marking new targets
By
Wayne Forrest
When healthcare practitioners think of computer-aided detection (CAD) technology today, they usually consider using it with mammography for early breast cancer detection. As technology and research progress, however, there is a developing consensus among radiologists that CAD can aid in uncovering abnormalities in applications such as breast MRI, lung cancer screening, and virtual colonoscopy exams.

Gadolinium effective in CTA of pulmonary circulation
By
N. Shivapriya
Gadolinium-based contrast agents, usually reserved for MR imaging, can provide diagnostic CT angiograms of pulmonary circulation with 16-detector-row CT, and can be used as an alternative to iodinated contrast in patients with contraindications for iodinated agents, according to researchers from France.

Lung PET rules when CT is equivocal, discordant
By
Eric Barnes
Although PET's high cost ensures that CT and radiography will remain the first-line lung cancer detection modalities for at least the near future, PET can be very useful adjunctively in patients whose diagnosis remains uncertain in the light of available radiographic and clinical evidence.

PET/CT provides cost-savings for NSCLC radiotherapy
By
Jonathan S. Batchelor
PET/CT technology has been demonstrating superior diagnostic and staging capabilities for various malignancies in scientific studies. But the technology comes at a steep price point, and models for its economic efficiencies are still being created. However, researchers from Canada have found PET/CT to be cost-effective in radiation therapy planning for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

3D diminution index spots lung nodules attached to blood vessels
By
Eric Barnes
BERLIN - A principal limitation of lung cancer imaging is the difficulty of distinguishing lung nodules attached to blood vessels from normal blood vessels, especially in CT data. But researchers from Japan have developed a 3D feature called the diminution index, which scans the CT pulmonary blood vessel data for signs of rapidly expanding shapes that can indicate a nodule rather than a blood vessel.

3D rendering captures SNM's Image of the Year
By
Jonathan S. Batchelor
TORONTO - A 3D volumetric virtual bronchoscopy rendering was named the 2005 Image of the Year at the Society of Nuclear Medicine (SNM) meeting on Monday. The Stanford University study was designed to validate a PET/CT acquisition and image processing protocol to produce 3D rendered fusion images.
