Radiology resident pursues lifelong dream

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

Winning a spot in a radiology residency program is a coveted goal for many medical school graduates. That's also the case for one Alabama resident, with an interesting twist -- he's 54 years old.

Dr. Dennis Bielecki is a PGY5 resident at the University of South Alabama Medical Center in Mobile, where his fellow residents are in some cases decades younger. Dr. Bielecki's fascinating route to residency is the subject of an article by staff writer Tracie L. Thompson that we're featuring in our Residents Digital Community.

Dr. Bielecki's journey has included medical school in Poland, a family-practice internship in Minnesota, and a musculoskeletal imaging research fellowship in California. Along the way he started a medical transcription consulting firm, taught as a medical school instructor, and even served as a high school substitute teacher.

Although Bielecki's career has been anything but typical, his words of inspiration can be applied to anyone seeking a career as a physician. You'll find the rest of the story in our Residents Digital Community, at
