The Joint Commission has included imaging safety requirements in its hospital and critical access hospital accreditation programs, effective January 1, 2026.
The Joint Commission told AuntMinnie via email that the accreditation requirements reflected in National Performance Goals (NPGs) 13 signal imaging safety as essential to patient safety and quality improvement. NPGs will replace National Patient Safety Goals.
"Joint Commission has introduced National Performance Goals (NPGs) -- a new chapter that organizes requirements that rise above regulation (excluding the 'Medical Staff' (MS) chapter) into salient, measurable topics with clearly defined goals," the Joint Commission explained. "Some requirements associated with [Conditions of Participation] CoPs are included in the NPG chapter because they address critical issues that warrant elevation to the level of an NPG."
