Elekta to buy CMS

Radiation oncology firm Elekta of Stockholm has finalized plans to acquire radiation treatment planning firm CMS of St. Louis.

Elekta has signed a purchase agreement to acquire CMS for $75 million in cash. The transaction could close as soon as March.

CMS develops and markets advanced radiation therapy planning equipment, and supports more than 1,500 sites in clinical operation worldwide. There are eight clinical installations of its treatment planning for proton therapy devices, which feature the company's Mosaiq information management system.

In fiscal year 2007 (end-September 31), CMS reported orders worth $61 million.

PET/CT scans ‘crucial’ in patients with NK/T-cell lymphoma

A 50-year-old man with recently diagnosed nasal-type NK/T-cell lymphoma underwent an F-18 FDG-PET/CT scan (A–D) for initial staging. Maximum-intensity-projection image (A) shows hypermetabolic lesions in both ethmoid sinus (thin arrow), both cervical lymphatic chains (arrowhead), left upper lung (thick arrow), liver, and spleen. Transaxial images show an F-18 FDG-avid mass in both ethmoid sinus (B). The scan shows intense F-18 FDG radiotracer uptake in left upper lung and uptake in the liver and spleen (CT showed no lesions), suggesting malignancy (C–D). Finally, after the PET/CT scan was done, the patient’s staging was changed from II to IV.

FES-PET better than FDG-PET in breast cancer patients

In a head-to-head comparison, F-18 fluoroestradiol (FES)-PET/CT was better than standard FDG-PET/CT for the initial staging of estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer patients.
