Siemens Medical Solutions is unveiling several new technologies at this week's American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) meeting in Los Angeles.
Siemens introduced CTVision -- an upgraded version of the Malvern, PA, company's Primatom product -- for radiation treatment delivery that integrates a linear accelerator and a CT scanner. The system, which travels along rails, uses CT image guidance to image a patient on the treatment table, eliminating the need to move the patient from room to room for separate exams.
Siemens also is showing its work-in-progress In-Line kVision kilovoltage conebeam imaging technology for 3D soft-tissue contrast, primarily for pelvic and thoracic targeting. By visualizing the target in-line (rotated 180°), the kV geometry is designed to streamline imaging workflow and provide open access to the patient.
Another work-in-progress is Siemens' PreScision stereotactic product, which will be available on most Siemens linear accelerators. PreScision is designed to deliver greater amounts of radiation in fewer treatment fractions. This technique means less time in treatment for patients and a complete course of radiation therapy in fewer visits.
