Siemens wins California particle beam contract

Siemens Medical Solutions of Malvern, PA, has signed an agreement to provide integrated software systems and equipment for a future health science research campus to be developed by Touro University of Vallejo, CA.

Touro University offers osteopathic medicine, pharmacy, and health sciences and education degrees. The $1.2 billion campus will include a particle therapy center, which will offer particle beam therapy for cancer, including proton beam and heavy carbon ions, and will be the first site in the U.S. to offer this kind of treatment, according to Touro.

Currently, particle therapy is only available in Japan and Germany. Touro’s proposed particle beam therapy is subject to final U.S. Food and Drug Administration clearance, Siemens said.

PET/CT scans ‘crucial’ in patients with NK/T-cell lymphoma

A 50-year-old man with recently diagnosed nasal-type NK/T-cell lymphoma underwent an F-18 FDG-PET/CT scan (A–D) for initial staging. Maximum-intensity-projection image (A) shows hypermetabolic lesions in both ethmoid sinus (thin arrow), both cervical lymphatic chains (arrowhead), left upper lung (thick arrow), liver, and spleen. Transaxial images show an F-18 FDG-avid mass in both ethmoid sinus (B). The scan shows intense F-18 FDG radiotracer uptake in left upper lung and uptake in the liver and spleen (CT showed no lesions), suggesting malignancy (C–D). Finally, after the PET/CT scan was done, the patient’s staging was changed from II to IV.

FES-PET better than FDG-PET in breast cancer patients

In a head-to-head comparison, F-18 fluoroestradiol (FES)-PET/CT was better than standard FDG-PET/CT for the initial staging of estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer patients.
