MQSA Made Easy, Understanding and Implementing the Facility-Based Final Regulations

MQSA Made Easy, Understanding and Implementing the Facility-Based Final Regulations by Bonnie Rush, 12th ed.
Breast Imaging Specialists, San Diego, CA, 2005, $90

As the title indicates, this comprehensive manual delivers, taking the sting out of implementing the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA). Bonnie Rush systematically defines every component of the facility-based federal mandates and clarifies the issues, making it simple to understand the requisites.

The book is broken down into sections including accreditation and certification, reporting/recordkeeping, quality assurance, an overview of the inspection process, and non-compliance levels.

Sample charts and tables offer ideas on how to manage personnel documentation and equipment repairs. A sample annual survey summary lays out the wording required for standard operating procedures, such as infection control policy, consumer complaint mechanism, and lay letters. Rush also discusses medical outcomes audit and the proper assignment of the assessment categories.

The book offers easily adaptable guidance on how facilities can meet the requirements. For example, in order to comply with the mandates for continuing experience, an interpreting physician may count comparison films, while a supervising technologist can count exams performed with her during the training of another technologist. Tips such as these are detailed throughout the manual resulting in an interesting read of what is an obviously dry subject.

Rush's extensive research into complex regulatory issues is an important contribution to the mammography community. MQSA Made Easy is a quick, accurate, thorough, and easily understood way to access the information necessary to remain in compliance with regulatory requirements. As a mammography consultant and educator, I consider this valuable resource to be a must-have for all mammography libraries.
