Positron gets solid-state patents

PET developer Positron of Houston has received patents for solid-state photodetector technology that the company said could be used to develop a new generation of medical imaging scanners, as well as radiation detection technology for homeland security use.

Positron said it received four patents covering the design and construction of a new class of compact solid-state photodetectors. The company said the technology "will enable the development of the next generation of efficient and economical full-body scanning devices, integrated PET/MRI scanners, and the development of a single-use organ-specific low-cost camera that can be disposed of after a single medical procedure."

The homeland security application is based on the use of the photodetectors as part of a small, portable device that can detect very low levels of radiation at a distance, such as that from an illicit radioactive device, the company said.

Examples in two patients. The lesions were in contact with the bone, which raised a suspicion of osteomyelitis (left panel, MIP image; right panel, axial SPECT/CT). A circular VOI was drawn on DFIs and the SUVmax was 1.0 (lower than the cutoff of 1.1). After 10 weeks of antibiotic treatment, the infection was successfully resolved, and the foot was preserved.
