Elekta moves to acquire planning firm CMS

Radiation oncology firm Elekta of Stockholm, Sweden, has signed a letter of intent to acquire radiation treatment planning firm CMS of St. Louis for $75 million.

Elekta plans to finalize negotiations by mid-February and close the transaction in March. The acquisition remains subject to regulatory approvals and other conditions.

The deal would add CMS' radiation treatment planning (RTP) systems, as well as its Mosaiq information management product, to Elekta's oncology portfolio.

CMS has 290 employees worldwide, with regional offices in Tampa, FL; Freiburg, Germany; Tokyo; Sydney, Australia; and Shanghai. In fiscal year 2007 (end-September 30), the company reported orders valuing $61 million.

In October, CMS received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for Monaco, a next-generation intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) planning platform.

PET/CT scans ‘crucial’ in patients with NK/T-cell lymphoma

PET/CT has significant advantages over conventional methods for lesion detection and staging in patients with natural killer/T-cell lymphoma.

A 50-year-old man with recently diagnosed nasal-type NK/T-cell lymphoma underwent an F-18 FDG-PET/CT scan (A–D) for initial staging. Maximum-intensity-projection image (A) shows hypermetabolic lesions in both ethmoid sinus (thin arrow), both cervical lymphatic chains (arrowhead), left upper lung (thick arrow), liver, and spleen. Transaxial images show an F-18 FDG-avid mass in both ethmoid sinus (B). The scan shows intense F-18 FDG radiotracer uptake in left upper lung and uptake in the liver and spleen (CT showed no lesions), suggesting malignancy (C–D). Finally, after the PET/CT scan was done, the patient’s staging was changed from II to IV.

FES-PET better than FDG-PET in breast cancer patients

In a head-to-head comparison, F-18 fluoroestradiol (FES)-PET/CT was better than standard FDG-PET/CT for the initial staging of estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer patients.
