Philips SmartArc used for first time in U.S.

Pinnacle3 SmartArc technology from Philips Healthcare of Andover, MA, has been used for the first time in the U.S. on a gynecological patient at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, FL.

SmartArc features advanced tools for volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT) treatment planning, which delivers radiation dose in single or multiple arcs around a patient. VMAT is designed to reduce treatment time, increase accuracy, and potentially spare healthy tissue.

Clinicians at Moffitt utilized the SmartArc module to plan the VMAT treatment, which was delivered by a Trilogy linear accelerator from Varian Medical Systems of Palo Alto, CA, and the Mosaiq image-enabled oncology information system from Elekta of Stockholm.
