Varian debuts Unique for global markets

Radiation therapy firm Varian Medical Systems has introduced a new low-energy radiation therapy system for international cancer clinics at this week's European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ESTRO) conference in Maastricht, Netherlands.

Called Unique, the system includes image-guidance technology with the Palo Alto, CA-based vendor's RapidArc treatment capabilities, and it will be available for less than $2 million. It features a low-energy medical linear accelerator and is suited for treating cancers of the head and neck, breast, cervix, and prostate, according to the firm.

In addition to the full-featured Unique Performance Edition, Varian will also offer Unique Power Edition, which comes without RapidArc technology or image-guidance software.

In other ESTRO developments, Varian is showcasing a new version of its Eclipse treatment planning system, featuring speed, precision, and clinical flexibility enhancements.
