Varian gets Beijing install

Radiation therapy firm Varian Medical Systems of Palo Alto, CA, has installed its RapidArc radiotherapy systems at the Beijing Cancer Hospital, the company announced.

Beijing Cancer Hospital is the first hospital in mainland China to introduce the technique, Varian said. Doctors at the hospital intend to use RapidArc primarily for treating lung cancer, esophageal cancer, rectal cancer, and head and neck cancer. The hospital has used conventional intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), but expects RapidArc to cut treatment times and therefore waiting lists for the treatment, according to Varian.

In other Varian news, RapidArc is being used at the Space Coast Cancer Center in Titusville, FL, to deliver image-guided radiotherapy that conforms to a targeted area two to eight times faster than was previously possible, the company said.
