ASRT: Radiation therapy staffing remains stable

Staffing rates for radiation therapy facilities have remained relatively stable within the past two years, according to a study recently performed by the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT).

The survey, which focused on medical facilities that employ full-time radiation therapists, found that sites with a 2009 budget for radiation therapists reported having 4.97 full-time therapists on staff. That figure is down slightly from the 5.20 full-time therapists reported in the 2007 survey, according to the Albuquerque, NM-based society.

In other findings, the survey also found that the vacancy rate for radiation therapists has reached 7.6%, up slightly from the 5.4% reported in 2007. Also, approximately 89% of respondents indicated that their facility has a CT device used for treatment simulation.

Of these facilities, 81% indicated that the simulator was located in the radiation therapy department; about 15% said it was in the radiology department.
