Varian gets UPHS contract

Radiation oncology vendor Varian Medical Systems said that the University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS) has agreed to purchase a variety of the company's radiotherapy treatment products.

Palo Alto, CA-based Varian said it will provide four Clinac iX linear accelerators equipped with On-Board Imager devices for image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), and high-resolution 120-leaf multileaf collimators; an Acuity digital imaging device for treatment simulation and verification; 20 Eclipse treatment planning workstations for planning external beam radiotherapy, including 3D conformal, intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), IGRT, and proton treatments; the xArray optical guidance system; the RPM respiratory gating system; the Aria oncology information system; and accessories for delivering stereotactic radiosurgery.

A new UPHS cancer treatment facility is expected to be ready for clinical use some time in 2008, according to Varian.

PET/CT scans ‘crucial’ in patients with NK/T-cell lymphoma

A 50-year-old man with recently diagnosed nasal-type NK/T-cell lymphoma underwent an F-18 FDG-PET/CT scan (A–D) for initial staging. Maximum-intensity-projection image (A) shows hypermetabolic lesions in both ethmoid sinus (thin arrow), both cervical lymphatic chains (arrowhead), left upper lung (thick arrow), liver, and spleen. Transaxial images show an F-18 FDG-avid mass in both ethmoid sinus (B). The scan shows intense F-18 FDG radiotracer uptake in left upper lung and uptake in the liver and spleen (CT showed no lesions), suggesting malignancy (C–D). Finally, after the PET/CT scan was done, the patient’s staging was changed from II to IV.

FES-PET better than FDG-PET in breast cancer patients
