Siemens launches MRI scanners in U.S.

Siemens Healthcare has received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market two new MRI scanners in the U.S., the Malvern, PA-based vendor said.

The company's Magnetom Aera 1.5-tesla and Magnetom Skyra 3-tesla MRI scanners feature 70-cm magnet bores. They include Siemens' Tim (Total imaging matrix) 4G radiofrequency (RF) technology, which can integrate RF transmit and receive components at the magnet, eliminating analog cables, according to Siemens. The two scanners also feature the company's Dot (Day optimizing throughput) engine, which offers engines for brain, cardiac, abdomen, and knee exams.

Magnetom Aera and Skyra systems have been available outside the U.S. since November 2009, Siemens said.
