GE, Varian Inc. launch 7-tesla MRI unit

GE Healthcare of Chalfont St. Giles, U.K., and scientific instruments developer Varian Inc. of Palo Alto, CA, have launched Discovery MR901, a new 7-tesla MRI scanner for preclinical applications.

Discovery MR901 was developed through a collaboration between the firms that was announced in September 2008. The system combines GE's diagnostic technology with Varian's scientific platform to excel in soft-tissue contrast and noninvasive techniques, including those used for research in anatomy, metabolism, and physiology.

Preclinical MRI applications possible with Discovery MR901 include brain and organ imaging, tumor assessment, disease progression assessment, and functional imaging. Other potential research applications include investigating new contrast mechanisms and agents, monitoring gene expression, analyzing protein interactions, and determining pharmacokinetics.

The first Discovery MR901 scanner is ready for shipment pending preparation at the customer's site.
