Multimodality vendor GE Healthcare of Waukesha, WI, has installed a 9.4-tesla MRI scanner at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). The system will be unveiled on September 21.
The system will be used to help identify and monitor conditions and diseases of the brain, including stroke, Alzheimer's disease, autism, and mental illness, UIC said.
The high field strength of the magnet will allow researchers to detect signals from elements such as sodium, phosphorus, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen, enabling them to visualize biochemical changes in the brain almost in real time, according to UIC.
