AECL plans for late July restart

Atomic Energy of Canada (AECL) expects medical isotope production at its National Research Universal (NRU) reactor in Chalk River, Ontario, to begin by the end of July.

In its latest update, AECL noted that inspections and assessments have confirmed that the reactor, which produces approximately half of the molybdenum-99 (Mo-99) supply for North America, can now be returned to service.

AECL is scheduled to appear before the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission on July 5 for a public hearing to consider its application to restart NRU.

If all goes as planned, AECL anticipates the resumption of Mo-99 production by the end of July.
