Canada issues call for isotope proposals

The government of Canada has issued a call for project proposals as part of its effort to create a new source of medical isotopes.

The government is providing funding worth $35 million Canadian ($33.7 million U.S.) over the next two years to develop linear accelerator and cyclotron technologies for the production of the medical isotope technetium-99m.

The deadline for project submissions is July 26, 2010. For more information about the program and how to submit a project proposal, visit www.isotopes.nrcan.gc.ca.

The Canadian government is a major provider of radioisotopes for medical applications through its Atomic Energy of Canada (AECL) agency, but supplies have been constrained since last year due to the ongoing shutdown of AECL's National Research Universal nuclear reactor at Chalk River, Ontario.
