Siemens inks isotope pact with UNM

Siemens Healthcare of Malvern, PA, has signed a 15-year agreement for the University of New Mexico (UNM) Cancer Center in Albuquerque to serve as the company's biomarker and research partner.

With the installation of two Siemens' Eclipse cyclotrons, UNM will launch an isotope production facility and radiopharmacy at the new $90 million, 200,000-sq-ft UNM Cancer Treatment and Clinical Research Facility. The cyclotrons are expected to be operational by March 1, 2010.

Siemens will use one cyclotron and the radiopharmacy for producing and distributing medical isotopes for the southwestern region of the U.S. through its PETNet Solutions subsidiary. UNM will utilize the other cyclotron to produce experimental isotopes for research.

The UNM Cancer Center is one of 65 U.S. National Cancer Institute-designated cancer centers in the nation. It is home to 85 board-certified oncology physicians representing every cancer specialty and more than 120 research scientists.
