Cedara debuts new image fusion software

Cedara Software, a subsidiary of Milwaukee-based Merge Healthcare, has introduced several new work-in-progress software products for deformable registration and image fusion. The software can be used for applications such as PET/CT and lung SPECT/CT, as well as brain MRI/SPECT.

Image fusion allows physicians to compare data from several different modalities simultaneously via registration algorithms that correct for discrepancies caused by image acquisition, patient position, and breathing motion, according to Mississauga, Ontario-based Cedara. Rigid registration magnifies, rotates, or translates one image to match another, while nonrigid or deformable registration warps, shears, or bends an image to correspond with another, the company said.

The deformable registration software for PET/CT imaging has obtained U.S. Food and Drug Administration 510(k) clearance, Cedara said.
