Philips installs first hybrid SPECT/CT units

Multimodality vendor Philips Medical Systems of Andover, MA, has completed the first installations of its Precedence hybrid SPECT/CT systems. One of the units was installed at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, while another has been placed at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.

Precedence combines a Philips Brilliance CT scanner with a ceiling-mounted Skylight gamma camera into a hybrid unit capable of acquiring functional and anatomical imaging data. The system is available in either 16- or six-slice configurations.

Philips said a unique feature of the 16-slice model is its ability to conduct a range of cardiac studies such as coronary calcium scoring, myocardial perfusion imaging, and CT coronary angiography, in addition to nuclear-based heart studies.

The system comes with the company's JetStream workstation, with Astonish the name of the company's proprietary set of image reconstruction algorithms. Commercial shipments of Precedence will begin in May, the company said.
