FDA reports problems at Fla. mammo center

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has found that a mammography center in Florida produced "poor quality mammograms with unreliable results," according to a safety notification issued by the agency.

The FDA is alerting patients who had mammograms between May 21, 2008, and September 30, 2009, at a facility in Plantation, FL, operated by MedPro Imaging about possible problems with the quality of mammograms at the center. Not all of the exams were inaccurate, but patients might need to have their tests re-evaluated or repeated, according to the agency.

The FDA conducted its review with the American College of Radiology (ACR) of Reston, VA. The review found quality problems in the facility's mammograms, including poor positioning, excessive contrast, underexposed exams, poor breast compression, and artifacts, according to FDA spokesperson Erica Jefferson.

"The FDA was initially notified about mammography problems by the American College of Radiology through its review of mammograms during the accreditation process," Jefferson told AuntMinnie.com in an e-mail. "A subsequent review of additional mammograms was performed by the ACR."

MedPro Imaging of Waukesha, WI, ceased operations at the Plantation location in October 2009, Jefferson said; the facility is now operating under new management as Rivero Diagnostic Center. The agency recommends that women who had mammograms at the facility during the time in question and have not had another exam since then should talk to their current healthcare provider about follow-up.

Patients can request a copy of their mammogram taken by MedPro Imaging by contacting Rivero Diagnostic Center.
