Philips Healthcare parent Royal Philips Electronics said it has developed a digital silicon photomultiplier technology that it believes will allow for faster and more accurate photon counting in applications such as PET imaging.
A prototype detector will be presented at the 2009 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium and Medical Imaging Conference in Orlando, FL, later this month. The light detection technology combines single-photon detectors (silicon avalanche photodiodes) with low-voltage complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) logic on the same silicon substrate, according to Philips of Eindhoven, Netherlands.
The silicon photomultipliers can be manufactured using a conventional CMOS process technology, Philips said. The company said it's actively looking for development partners with application expertise to exploit the market potential of the technology.
