Varian debuts next-generation Eclipse

Radiation therapy vendor Varian Medical Systems has introduced a new version of its Eclipse radiotherapy treatment planning software, which speeds up the process of planning radiotherapy treatments, according to the Palo Alto, CA-based firm.

The release incorporates new planning protocols and optimization tools that make it easier to plan treatments such as intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), Varian said.

The new Eclipse iteration incorporates treatment plan templates that allow doctors to adjust their established treatment protocols for specific types of cancer. The company has also added a quicker AAA dose calculation algorithm, an automated segmentation tool for contouring, an automated beam-angle optimization tool, and a remote connect feature that enables clinicians to use a virtual private network and high-speed Internet connection to access their treatment planning systems remotely.

PET/CT scans ‘crucial’ in patients with NK/T-cell lymphoma

A 50-year-old man with recently diagnosed nasal-type NK/T-cell lymphoma underwent an F-18 FDG-PET/CT scan (A–D) for initial staging. Maximum-intensity-projection image (A) shows hypermetabolic lesions in both ethmoid sinus (thin arrow), both cervical lymphatic chains (arrowhead), left upper lung (thick arrow), liver, and spleen. Transaxial images show an F-18 FDG-avid mass in both ethmoid sinus (B). The scan shows intense F-18 FDG radiotracer uptake in left upper lung and uptake in the liver and spleen (CT showed no lesions), suggesting malignancy (C–D). Finally, after the PET/CT scan was done, the patient’s staging was changed from II to IV.
