Philips expands radiation oncology line

Philips Medical Systems is introducing several new products at this week's annual meeting of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) in Pittsburgh.

Conformal Arc radiation panning software allows users of Philips' Pinnacle3 radiation therapy planning system to treat patients with hundreds of beams while conforming to the target, according to the firm. Philips is also showing physics modeling tools for Pinnacle3, adding more precise representation of linear accelerator parameters.

The Andover, MA-based vendor is also showcasing sliding-window intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) treatment planning. This tool allows users of Philips P3IMRT software and Varian linear accelerators to plan treatments using radiation that's delivered as the multileaf collimators move across the treatment field, Philips said.

All three products recently received Food and Drug Administration 510(k) clearance, Philips said.

PET/CT scans ‘crucial’ in patients with NK/T-cell lymphoma

A 50-year-old man with recently diagnosed nasal-type NK/T-cell lymphoma underwent an F-18 FDG-PET/CT scan (A–D) for initial staging. Maximum-intensity-projection image (A) shows hypermetabolic lesions in both ethmoid sinus (thin arrow), both cervical lymphatic chains (arrowhead), left upper lung (thick arrow), liver, and spleen. Transaxial images show an F-18 FDG-avid mass in both ethmoid sinus (B). The scan shows intense F-18 FDG radiotracer uptake in left upper lung and uptake in the liver and spleen (CT showed no lesions), suggesting malignancy (C–D). Finally, after the PET/CT scan was done, the patient’s staging was changed from II to IV.
