Riverain gets VA contract

Computer-aided detection (CAD) developer Riverain Medical of Miamisburg, OH, has received a contract from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for its OnGuard CAD technology.

Radiologists at VA hospitals will use OnGuard to detect suspicious nodules on digital radiography chest exams. Veterans are 25% to 75% more likely to develop some form of lung cancer than nonveterans, according to a recent study in the American Journal of Psychiatry.

The study, which reviewed cancer rates over 26 years in a population of 248,000 U.S. veterans, found that more than half of cancer deaths among current smokers were attributable to cigarette smoking. Further, lung cancer is the most widespread malignancy among veterans and is one of the most common diagnoses requiring inpatient care through the VA, which spends upward of a half a billion dollars each year on smoking-related disease, Riverain said.
