VirtualScopics nets 3D patent

Image-related biomarker developer VirtualScopics has been issued a U.S. patent for a technology to create 3D images from MRI scans, according to the Rochester, NY-based vendor.

The patent (No. 6,984,981) relates to a new technology that improves the resolution and tissue contrast obtained from conventional MRI, VirtualScopics said. Two or more MRI scans are performed from different directions and the images are fused using the firm's software algorithms to produce 3D visualizations of tissue, the company said.
