Breast MRI shows high negative predictive value in BI-RADS 3 lesions

Breast MRI exhibits a high negative predictive value in patients with BI-RADS category 3 lesions, according to a study from the Medical University of Graz in Graz, Austria, to be presented on Monday.

Claudio Spick, MD, and colleagues plan to present findings from their study, which included 1,237 women who had breast MRI exams between May 2000 and May 2007.

Spick's team identified 192 women out of the total cohort of 1,237 with lesions classified as BI-RADS 3; 112 of these women had adequate follow-up (at least two years of clinical, histopathologic, and/or imaging follow-up). Of these, histopathology showed 40 benign lesions and four malignant ones; the remaining 68 women (who did not have histopathologic evaluation of their breast lesions) were classified as benign.

The study team found that the negative predictive value of breast MRI in these BI-RADS 3 lesions was 96.4%, which suggests that these types of lesions may require further classification when they are discovered.
