It's been a big year for ultrasound, and the presentations at the virtual RSNA 2020 meeting are sure to continue that trend. The conference will cover a number of cutting-edge ultrasound topics, including the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and contrast-enhanced applications.

In our preview, experts discuss some of the new technologies redefining ultrasound and reelevating the modality's status within radiology. At RSNA 2020, attendees will have the opportunity to learn about emerging sensor technologies to improve image quality, further miniaturization for better vascular access, and numerous AI applications.

One ultrasound topic that may be in short supply at RSNA, though, is the use of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) for COVID-19 imaging. While the ultrasound community has no doubt been affected by the pandemic, many radiology researchers have focused their COVID-19 efforts on CT. As a result, much of the pulmonary ultrasound research has come from nontraditional ultrasound users, including emergency physicians.

Our preview also discusses some of the trends leading to the continued democratization of POCUS use, for COVID-19 imaging and beyond. Experts also share practical steps radiologists can take to step up as imaging leaders and shape the future of ultrasound use at their institutions.

Ultrasound steps up in COVID-19 pandemic
It's impossible to talk about ultrasound in 2020 without mentioning the COVID-19 pandemic. But perhaps unlike with other imaging modalities, the novel coronavirus pandemic has put a spotlight on larger, evolving trends in ultrasound research and use.  Discuss
