Dilon Technologies will unwrap a work-in-progress gamma-guided localization system for gamma-guided biopsies, GammaLoc, and will also display upgrades to its Dilon 6800 gamma camera for attendees at this year's RSNA show in Chicago.

The Dilon 6800 gamma camera will feature new position-sensitive photomultiplier tubes that provide a larger active area and improve imaging along the detector edges, according to the Newport News, VA-based developer. The portable and mobile system duplicates standard mammographic views, images up to the chest wall, and resolves lesions as small as 3 mm, the company said.

The device is targeted at hospital breast centers and independent breast imaging centers, and is used for a diagnostic breast workup as a complementary imaging modality to mammography, early detection of breast cancer, and evaluation for disease extent.

It is available now in the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico, Europe, and Korea.

The GammaLoc system for gamma-guided biopsies is a retrofit for Dilon 6800 that allows 3D localization of focal intensities when using molecular imaging agents, the firm said. The initial application of the device is for biopsy of cases in which breast-specific gamma imaging (BSGI) reveals a focal intensity without mammography or ultrasound correlation.

Dilon said it is currently in the process of obtaining CE Mark clearance in Europe, as well as U.S. Food and Drug Administration clearance, and expects that GammaLoc will be available next year.
