Merge Healthcare/Cedara Software

Merge Healthcare joined forces with Cedara in 2005 when Merge bought the Canadian firm in May 2005. The combined firms will demonstrate their range of advanced visualization software products.

Cedara B-CAD is a CAD product for breast ultrasound studies. The software is designed to help radiologists assess solid breast nodules by automatically analyzing, segmenting, and classifying shape and orientation characteristics of user-selected regions of interest for CAD analysis. It incorporates annotations based on the American College of Radiology's BI-RADS Breast Imaging Atlas, and automatically generates reports using the ACR's BI-RADS Ultrasound Lexicon Classification form.

The software can be integrated into existing PACS applications or can be used as an option to Cedara's I-ReadMammo workstation. The software was cleared in June 2005 and is available in the U.S. immediately, with availability in other countries dependent on regulatory review.

On I-ReadMammo, Cedara will highlight the capabilities of this dedicated mammography viewing software. I-ReadMammo supports CAD results from multiple applications across multiple modalities, enabling users to rely on a single workstation for breast imaging. The software can be integrated into existing PACS applications or used as a standalone workstation. It is available in the U.S., Europe, and Canada.

Cedara will highlight its Cedara OrthoWorks Suite, including a variety of visualization applications for orthopedic use. The software offers new automated workflow for orthopedic measurements, as well as the company's ImageSnap automated templating technique.

Automated measurements can be customized on OrthoWorks for individual users, and the software offers a large digital template library. Multimodality support, 3D advanced visualization and segmentation, advanced spine analysis, and image and information tracking and correlation for longitudinal studies are also available.

OrthoWorks may be purchased either as a standalone workstation or as DICOM-compatible software that can be integrated into existing applications. It supports single or multiple screens and is offered in a Web-enabled package that requires minimal maintenance, according to the company. The software has 510(k) clearance and is available in the U.S., Canada, and Europe.

Cedara AccuImage CalScore Review is an advanced calcium scoring module for cardiac studies. The application supports lesion-by-lesion and side-by-side comparison for follow-up or repeat scanning, as well as detailed report generation.

The software was developed in cooperation with cardiac CT imaging expert Dr. John Rumberger and features exclusive use of his lesion mass database. Users can choose between Agatston, volume, or mass-based methods of calcium scoring. The software also includes workflow tools with which users can customize a patient database, track a facility's current referral base, compare prior versus current calcium scores, and capture follow-up appointments. The software has FDA clearance and is available in the U.S.; availability in other countries is subject to regulatory clearance.

Cedara Colon Review is designed for review and reporting of colon and other luminal studies. The application supports both 2D and 3D primary viewing and is intended for facilities that want to expand their services to include virtual colonoscopy.

The software includes automated path-finding, simulated endoscopic fly-through, and simultaneous forward and reverse views, and can be integrated as an optional plug-in for OEM PACS software. It has FDA clearance and is available in the U.S.; availability in other countries is subject to regulatory clearance.

Cedara Lung Review is a lung nodule visualization and analysis package that uses advanced viewing tools, nodule segmentation, and decision-tree support based on Early Lung Cancer Action Project (ELCAP) recommendations. It also provides automatic report generation.

Technical specifications for Cedara Lung Review include a four-pane viewing tool with real-time MPR and sliding-slab MIP, automatic nodule matching to prior studies, and the ability to integrate as a plug-in into OEM PACS software. The software has FDA clearance and is available in the U.S.; availability in other countries is subject to regulatory clearance.

The Cedara AccuImage 3D/4D Review advanced visualization package supports full color visualization, custom presets from an on-screen list or a programmable toolbar for quick access via a single mouse click, and interactive zoom and rotation of 3D images. Users can also employ advanced image smoothing and sharpening algorithms, multiple interactive cut planes, and region-of-interest tools. They can export a sequence of frames for continuous review in DICOM and standard video formats. The software has FDA clearance and is available in the U.S.; availability in other countries is subject to regulatory clearance.

Cedara AccuStitch is an image stitching and angle measurement application that allows users to stitch thoracic and lumbar films and compute Cobb angle measurements. Another product, Cedara DentalWorks Implant Planner, assists dentists in safely placing implants using CT imaging with an algorithm that is not affected by artifacts from metal fillings. Baby Explorer enables 3D viewing of fetal ultrasound exams, while Cedara PET/CT is a dedicated software application for reviewing hybrid PET/CT datasets.
