The American Society of Nuclear Cardiology (ASNC) has published its 2018 guidelines for SPECT myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI).

The document features updates on hardware, collimators, and cadmium zinc telluride gamma cameras, along with new sections on the following:

  • Reduced-count-density reconstruction techniques
  • SPECT myocardial blood-flow quantification
  • Stress-first/stress-only imaging
  • Patient-centered myocardial perfusion imaging

"Recent breakthroughs in SPECT technology enable, for the first time, exceedingly low radiation dose imaging, myocardial blood-flow quantitation, and personalized imaging protocols," said lead author Dr. Sharmila Dorbala. "We hope that by standardizing the contemporary practice of SPECT MPI, these guidelines will ultimately benefit patients with heart disease."

The guidelines have received the endorsement of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI).
