ASRT again pushes CARE bill

The American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) is once again promoting legislation to require certification standards for radiologic technologists.

The Albuquerque, NM, society said that HR 3652, the Consistency, Accuracy, Responsibility, and Excellence (CARE) in Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy bill, was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by Rep. John Barrow (D-GA).

The bill would set certification standards in the Medicare program for technical personnel who provide, plan, and deliver medical imaging and radiation therapy procedures. The ASRT believes that the legislation would ensure quality standards for imaging procedures, especially radiography, fluoroscopy, and ultrasound; these procedures are not covered in accreditation standards set by the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act (MIPPA), which only covers advanced modalities such as CT, MRI, PET, and nuclear medicine.
