Second stage of Panama investigation begins

The second stage of the Panamanian government's investigation into a fatal radiation therapy accident at the National Oncologic Institute in Panama began today, news agency La Prensa has reported.

Eight deaths have been reported so far among pelvic cancer patients who received radiation overdoses during radiotherapy treatment between August 2000 and February 2001.

Health ministry officials met today with the technical health advisory panel, the body responsible for identifying the role of each clinic staff member implicated in the accident, La Prensa said.

The health ministry's general director, Esteban Morales, said that since it is now known that there was a human error at the moment the radiotherapy application procedure was changed, what must now be determined is the why the change took place, whether someone ordered it, and whether or not there was supervision at the moment the procedure was changed, according to La Prensa.

PET/CT scans ‘crucial’ in patients with NK/T-cell lymphoma

A 50-year-old man with recently diagnosed nasal-type NK/T-cell lymphoma underwent an F-18 FDG-PET/CT scan (A–D) for initial staging. Maximum-intensity-projection image (A) shows hypermetabolic lesions in both ethmoid sinus (thin arrow), both cervical lymphatic chains (arrowhead), left upper lung (thick arrow), liver, and spleen. Transaxial images show an F-18 FDG-avid mass in both ethmoid sinus (B). The scan shows intense F-18 FDG radiotracer uptake in left upper lung and uptake in the liver and spleen (CT showed no lesions), suggesting malignancy (C–D). Finally, after the PET/CT scan was done, the patient’s staging was changed from II to IV.

FES-PET better than FDG-PET in breast cancer patients

In a head-to-head comparison, F-18 fluoroestradiol (FES)-PET/CT was better than standard FDG-PET/CT for the initial staging of estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer patients.
