September 12, 2022 -- Radiation therapist vacancy rates have increased by more than 10% in 2022, according to the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT).

The ASRT conducted its biennial staffing survey in June of this year. The report indicated a 10.7% vacancy rate for 2022, up from 2020's 7.2%. Vacancy rates for medical dosimetrists also increased, from 9.6% in 2020 to 11.3% this year.

Although the vacancy rate has increased, the average number of radiation therapists budgeted per facility has remained relatively stable, at 7.1 in 2020 to 7.3 in 2022.

Survey respondents noted that they work in facilities that offer an average of 14 radiation therapy services, of which the most common are radiation therapy (96.6%), CT simulation (94.8%), and conebeam CT (93.5%), the ASRT reported.
