Community facilities follow breast MRI rules

An overwhelming majority of facilities in the Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium (BCSC) performing breast MRI in the U.S. are compliant with technical guidelines for use of the modality, according to a study in the November issue of the Journal of the American College of Radiology.

The purpose of the study, led by Wendy DeMartini, MD, at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, was to evaluate breast MRI equipment and acquisition techniques currently used among community practice facilities across the U.S. The study assessed adherence to American College of Radiology Imaging Network (ACRIN) and European Society of Breast Imaging (EUSOBI) technical standards and requirements.

Researchers used data from the BCSC to determine compliance with current minimum standards specified by the ACRIN 6667 trial and the EUSOBI.

Results obtained from 14 of 23 facilities performing breast MRI found that compliance with equipment recommendations of 1.5-tesla MRI scanners was 94%, and all scanners used a dedicated breast coil, as recommended by both ACRIN and the EUSOBI.
